Winterizing Your Equal-i-zer hitch

Your Equal-i-zer hitch is the best sway control hitch on the market. With integrated sway control and weight distribution, you can be confident your Equal-i-zer hitch is working to keep you safe every time you tow. Each Equal-i-zer hitch comes with a limited lifetime warranty, which means with a little maintenance, you can plan on your Equal-i-zer hitch lasting longer than your tow vehicle or trailer!

When winterizing your trailer, it is a great time to quickly complete the Equal-i-zer Hitch Winterization Checklist. The entire process takes a few minutes and will keep your Equal-i-zer hitch in top condition.

  1. Wipe and clean the hitch including the trailer brackets.
    1. Remove grease and grime from the hitch ball and between the head and arm sockets
    2. Use a wire brush to clean and remove any rust spots. Household vinegar or other methods may also be used to clean any surface rust that remains. Rinse and dry well.
  2. Protect any exposed metal to prevent rust.
    1. Touch up any areas where the metal is exposed with a quality spray paint. Even a silver spray paint could be used to touch up and protect the hitch ball or bolts if needed.
    2. Touch up the trailer brackets. When painting be careful not to over-spray and get paint on other undesired areas of your trailer. The brackets could be removed for better coverage and to prevent over-spray. Just be sure to reinstall them properly and in the same location after the paint is completely dry.
  3. Store your hitch (shank/head and spring arms) in a clean, dry location – garage, shed, basement, etc.
  4. Come next year, don’t forget to lubricate the hitch before towing again. Open and follow the Equal-i-zer Hitch Lubrication Guide to lubricate the hitch head, and place a thin film of grease all around the hitch ball.
