What Can I Do About Hitch Sound?

When you tow a trailer, you will hear sound from both your hitch and trailer, regardless of whether you tow with a hitch or a ball mount. Most of the time, sound is coming from the contact your trailer coupler is making with your hitch ball. If after you grease your hitch ball well, you still hear sound, rest assured. Sound is normal with any weight distribution hitch and means it is working as it should. Steel-on-steel friction built into the Equal-i-zer sway control hitch gives you industry leading sway control to keep your trailer in line. Just like you hear a locomotive’s steel wheels as they are in contact with steel railroad tracks, you can plan on hearing your hitch working. With friction comes sound, but there are things you can do to lessen the sound and still enjoy superior sway control.

Some sound can come from the two friction points in the hitch head where the rotating sockets are sliding against the hitch head itself. These friction surfaces should be greased regularly with a bearing grease (Part #91-00-4250) both to manage the sound and to keep the wear under control extending the life of the hitch (See Figure 23 in your Owner’s Manual).

It is also possible for sound to be created from spring arms sliding along the L-brackets. We don’t recommend greasing the L-brackets. Instead, choose our patented Sway Bracket Jackets (Part #95-01-5150).
